Staying safe & enjoying the island

Staying safe & enjoying the island

Visiting Steep Holm is an unforgettable experience, but as a remote location accessed only by boat, it comes with unique challenges. To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, follow these key health and safety tips.

Preparing for your journey

  • Arrive 30 minutes early for your safety briefing and to put on a life jacket.
  • Dress appropriately - bring waterproofs and an extra layer. Even on sunny days, the sea breeze can be chilly.

On the boat

  • Sit down, hold on, and enjoy the ride - many say it’s the best part of the trip!
  • Always follow crew instructions for a smooth journey.

Arriving on the island

  • Some agility is needed to step onto the pebble beach, but assistance and steps are provided.
  • Climb the steep quay steps carefully and stay away from the edges - there are no railings.
  • Wear sturdy shoes or boots - flip-flops and slippers aren’t suitable.

Exploring safely

  • Watch out for old rail tracks, which can be slippery, and avoid poisonous plants.
  • Beware of Brown-Tailed Moth caterpillars - their webs and hairs can cause severe skin irritation. Found mostly on blackberry bushes in spring and early summer, they should not be touched.
  • Avoid the steep path to the South Landing, marked Danger!, as it leads to a cliff edge.
  • Stick to designated paths and watch for nesting birds and eggs.
  • Wear a hat and use high-factor sunscreen to protect against the sun - and the birds!

Health and environmental considerations

  • Do not touch or pick up any sick or dead birds. While the risk of bird flu transmission to humans is low, it’s best to report sightings to a volunteer or trustee.

Historic structures & hidden hazards

  • Use railings when descending into gunpowder rooms and WWII searchlight landings - the climb back up includes 208 steps!
  • Bring a torch for exploring storerooms and be cautious around WWII structures, as some contain hidden holes.
  • Do not enter the old pub - the building is unstable, and the upstairs floor could collapse.

Water safety

  • Do not swim - strong currents and high tides make it extremely dangerous.

Food & refreshments

  • Pack a lunch, as your visit lasts at least 12 hours. Light snacks, cakes, and cream teas are available at the barracks café.
  • Alcohol, including tinned beer, lager, and small bottles of wine, can be purchased, but please drink responsibly and enjoy the views sensibly.

Departure

  • Be ready 30 minutes before departure and head down to the landing on time.

Roam at your own risk

Visitors are welcome to explore freely but should be sensible and take precautions. The island’s steep cliffs, WWII remnants, and rugged terrain require care and attention. Take your time, be mindful of hazards, and most importantly - enjoy the breathtaking scenery, wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere of Steep Holm.
