What to see

Of the 260 or so plant species recorded on Steep Holm over an astonishing four centuries, depending on the season you may see Wild Wallflower, Stinking Iris, Great Mullein, Teasel, three types of Thistle, Feverfew, Weld, Ragwort, Hemp Agrimony, Ox-eye Daisy and Hemlock to name but a few. Several are thought to be from the Romans or 12th Century Monks.

Take a look below at some of the species you may find:

Tree Mallow

Large areas can be found across the island, especially between Split Rock and Rudder Rock

Henbane

These poisonous plants are thought to be either Roman or 12th Century Monastic introductions

Buck’s Horn Plantain

Unique to the island, can be found near the boathouse or the South Landing steps

Wild Leek

Our leeks are the lectotype for the species as a whole, so are an incredibly rare find

Ox-eye Daisy

These distinct flowers can be found throughout the island and are a powerhouse for the insects

Hounds Tongue

This medicinal plant can be found throughout the island and was widely used for their sedative, calming and slight narcotic effects

Wild Privet

A plant that can be found all year round, with white flowers in summer and matt-black poisonous berries in winter

Rock Sea Lavender

Also unique to the island, found near the boathouse or the South Landing steps

Mediterranean Wild Peony

With its single cerise flowers, you’ll find this between late-April and mid-May, followed by striking bright pink and black seeds in autumn
