The role of our volunteers
The island of Steep Holm is a rugged and historic gem in the Bristol Channel, reliant on dedicated volunteers to keep it thriving. From maintenance to visitor services, these individuals...
The Kenneth Allsop Memorial Trust was established to honour the legacy of a pioneering journalist and conservationist who passed away in 1973. Kenneth Allsop was widely respected for his passion for nature and his commitment to environmental issues. In 1976, through generous public support, the Trust successfully purchased Steep Holm, ensuring its protection for future generations. As a registered charity (no. 270059), its core mission is to preserve and enhance the island’s natural beauty, historical significance, wildlife, and scientific interest. By safeguarding these unique aspects, the Trust ensures that Steep Holm remains a place of discovery and appreciation for all who visit.
The island is managed by a dedicated team of Trustees who oversee its administration and conservation. Their responsibilities include maintaining the island’s landscape, protecting its wildlife, and ensuring that visitors can continue to enjoy its rich heritage. The Trust is privileged to have Simon King OBE as its President, a highly regarded wildlife filmmaker and television presenter known for his dedication to nature conservation. His involvement helps to raise awareness of Steep Holm’s ecological and historical importance. Volunteers and supporters also play a crucial role in maintaining the island, assisting with conservation projects, research efforts, and general upkeep. Their contributions help to keep Steep Holm a thriving and protected environment.
The Trust welcomes new members, whether they wish to take an active role in the care of Steep Holm or support the charity more quietly from afar. Membership provides a valuable opportunity to contribute to the island’s future, whether through volunteering, donations, or leaving a lasting legacy. The Trust also offers sponsorship opportunities for individuals and organisations looking to support its ongoing conservation efforts. Members receive regular newsletters, keeping them informed of developments on the island, and are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting and lunch, held each September in Weston-super-Mare. Those interested in joining or contributing to the Trust are encouraged to contact the Trustees for further details.
